How to Cut Packaging Costs When Moving - Moving Forward SF

If you’re getting ready to move, you might find yourself wishing you could just throw everything into a truck, screech off to your new home, dump it, then wriggle your nose and say abracadabra and shazam! You’re moved in! Unfortunately, such moving magic doesn’t exist. However, there are ways to make moving easier and more cost effective starting with packing materials. Packing materials include bubble wrap, boxes, mailing tape, packing paper, plastic containers and more! It all adds up and can be a burden on your wallet and the environment. Here are some tips on packaging that will save you cash and trash.

Pre-planning: How Much Do I need?

To avoid becoming knee-deep in packaging waste at the end of your move, estimate approximately how many boxes you’ll need for each room. From there, assess how many of those boxes will need protective packaging materials like bubble wrap or newspaper for your breakables.  There are plenty of moving calculators like this one and  this one that can help you arrive at a more accurate number.

Be Resourceful

Got old National Geographic magazines that have collected dust for years? How about that gigantic box that the vacuum cleaner you bought last year came in? Bet you could make some use out of that ugly xmas wrapping paper that nobody’s used since never. Before you go out spending multiple dollars on packaging, take stock of what you already have in your home. Check your basement, garage, attic and closets for things that can be used for protective materials like old clothes, towels, linens and blankets.

Start The Purge

Do you really need that box of old toys now that your kids are in their 20s? How about all those cords that connect to nothing? If you start purging a few months before your move, you may gain some empty boxes by getting rid of items you don’t need anymore. Start by clearing out areas where you keep the most disposable stuff (garage, attic, basement) and watch the empty boxes multiply!

Gather Free Boxes

When you’re getting ready to move, suddenly boxes are like gold in the form of cardboard currency so get collecting early! Instead of buying new boxes, start collecting boxes from grocery stores, electronic stores, liquor stores, wholesale stores and other local businesses.  Put it on social media blast that you are in need of boxes. Call your friends, family, neighbors. Put up a “Boxes Needed” poster next to the “Lost Kitty” poster if you have to! Get those free boxes!!!

Invest in Sturdier Containers

Going camping this summer? Do you collect decorations for Christmas, Halloween, Easter and all things holiday? If you have a need to store things you only use during parts of the year, it may be worth it to invest in large, plastic containers. Not only can they help you with packing for your move, you can also use them for storage later. Don’t want to buy, but need something more protective and sturdy for your breakables? Opt to rent instead!
